LILLE
PARKS AND GARDENS
Botanical Garden and Tropical Greenhouse
The Botanical Garden is located in the southern part of town (rue du
jardin des plantes). It showcases an impressive collection of different
types of shrubs and flowers, mainly roses and dhalias, beautifully
arranged around water.
In the Tropical Greenhouse, you will find various kinds of vegetation from tropical regions.
The Citadel and the zoo
Lille Zoo is free and open
daily. In it, you can see lots of different species of animals:
monkeys, zebras, panthers, rare birds, etc. It is located in the
largest park of Lille, the citadel park. This park is always open to
visitors and it includes the Bois de Boulogne, where you can find
some amazing trees : a Montpellier Maple, a Corsican Pine and
even a Giant Sequoia.
The Vauban Garden
Another park which never closes, the Vauban garden is listed on the
register of historic places. It was created to resemble an English
garden, with manicured lawns, lots of colourful flowerbeds,
brooks, a grotto and a waterfall. There is even a marionette theatre
for the pleasure of all children.
Henri Matisse Park
Another beautiful garden near the Roubaix Gate, this space was designed
by Gilles Clément to give an idea of constant evolvment, of
difference from one season to another.
This park is always open.
Park blvd. Lebas
This is a fairly new park, inaugurated in 2006 with the idea of
brightening up an urban area which lacked greenery. This space now
houses a large, manicured lawn as well as beautifully decorated
flower beds, play areas for children and several benches.
It is surrounded by a red fence with eight gates, the work of Dutch landscapers.
